The Community Service branch of the City Of Kawartha Lakes Police Service is made up of one officer, Constable Tammy Brydon whose primary role is to provide education and awareness to the members of her community. Constable Brydon strives to show that policing is more than just chasing the bad guys. She takes a proactive role in policing by attending 11 elementary and 3 secondary schools throughout the school year. The focus of the school programs is to educate the youth. It is important for the students to see police as a resource to call upon when needed rather that someone to fear.
Constable Brydon is known throughout the schools simply as, "Officer Tammy" and she thinks this is great! When kids begin to see the police as approachable, barriers begin to break down and communication begins. It is during school presentations when police myths are replace with real facts.
The Community Service Unit also provides education and information to the public at large. Specifically, the officer will provide information to businesses in an effort to reduce crimes. Constable Brydon has developed a number of programs aimed at making the public aware they can reduce their chance of becoming a victim. Some of the programs are counterfeit money and how to detect it, credit card and identity theft and personal safety.
When the officer assumed the role of the Community Service Officer in 2004, one of her priorities was to design programs that would educate the senior population. Often they are the targets for crimes as criminals often view them as "easy prey". Constable Brydon regularly attends senior groups to provide information on a number of subjects such as elder abuse, fraud and personal safety.
Community policing quite simply is being involved in your community. It is playing with kids, showing your support through fundraising efforts, lending an ear when someone has an idea to help reduce crime, educating, teaching, leading by example, being involved and yes, caring.
The City Of Kawartha Lakes Police Service takes pride in knowing that we can make a difference.
The City of Kawartha Lakes Police Service is grateful for the on going support they have received from local business in regards to the sponsorship of the Community Service Vehicle. In 1998 the then Community Service Officer, Constable Jim Hayes approached Brian Maunder, co- owner of Race Toyota and made inquiries as to the cost of leasing a vehicle for the program. Brian Maunder graciously agreed to sponsor part of the vehicle.
Next, Constable Hayes approached Marlene Morrison of Stewart Morrison Insurance with a request to also assist in the sponsorship of the vehicle. Very shortly thereafter, Ms. Morrison contacted Cst. Hayes with some fabulous news. Not only was Stewart Morrison Insurance willing to sponsor the vehicle but also she had made contact with Farmer's Mutual Insurance Company in Lindsay and arranged for this company to also sponsor the vehicle.
Thus the Community Service vehicle was and continues to be sponsored by three caring and committed business in our community: Race Toyota, Stewart Morrison Insurance and Farmer's Mutual Insurance.
The year 2005 brought with it the third vehicle for the Community Service Program, a 2005 Toyota Matrix. Constable Tammy Brydon, Community Service Officer is grateful for this ongoing sponsorship and commitment from the three businesses. The vehicle is used exclusively for the Community Service Programs, which allow other Police fleet vehicles to be utilized for police calls. It is the ongoing partnership of local business and the police working hand in hand that keep our community a safe place to call home.
